Maureen Fergus is an award-winning author of books for kids of all ages. Her books have been translated into half a dozen languages and have been shortlisted for such prestigious awards as the Canadian Children’s Book Centre Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award, the Canadian Library Association Young Adult Book Award, the
Saskatchewan Diamond Willow Reader’s Choice Award and the Ontario Library Association Silver Birch Award. Her novels include Exploits of a Reluctant (But Extremely Goodlooking) Hero, The Gypsy King trilogy and Ortega, which won the McNally Book for Young People award. Her picture books include the critically acclaimed Buddy and Earl series, InvisiBill and The Day My Mom Came to Kindergarten, which won the Ontario Library Asociation Blue Spruce Award.
Maureen worked in the aerospace, biochemistry and financial services industry before finding her true calling in writing books. When her first of three children was 6 weeks old she began writing and continues to find it exhilarating, frustrating, satisfying, exhausting and hard. She can’t imagine life without it. Maureen lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba with her family.
Maureen's visits are available for pre-schoolers, primary and middle grade readers as well as young adults. Engaging and funny, Maureen will generally do a reading from one of her books, talk a bit about the writing life and then open it up to questions. For older kids, she is happy to explore specific topics in writing upon request. In Maureen's experience, visits work best if there are not more than about fifty older kids in a group or thirty younger ones. For younger kids, she generally recommends splitting a one-hour visit into two back-to-back half-hour visits with two different groups because an hour can be an awfully long time to sit when you're six! Rates are $250+GST for a 60 minute visit (or two back-to-back 30 minute visits). Government Grants may be available to offset the cost and all expenses are extra for an out-of-town visit.
